Top Reasons You Will Love Pai

Pai is a very special place, one which you should visit if you’re looking for the most laid back location in the whole of Thailand. It is roughly 3 hours from Chiang Mai (the second largest city in the country) and it takes just over 5 hours from Chiang Rai to Pai.

I have been to Thailand on four occasions and always make a special effort to head north and enjoy Pai every time. So why do I love it so much and why do I think you will too? Here are 3 reasons:

Thor Phaeng Waterfall

This is a waterfall not to be missed. If you’re stuck on how to get there then just ask any of the fellow travellers you meet what the best way to reach slide waterfall is. Its been given the name ‘slide’ because there are some parts where you can actually slide down – it’s one of nature’s little gifts to us. For most of the year the weather during the day time can be very hot, so I think the Thor Phaeng Waterfall is one of the best places to cool down and have some fun. At the weekends you’ll find lots of local kids hanging out here with their parents having an absolute blast, seeing everyone have so much fun together makes it even more special.

The People You Meet

I don’t know what it is about Pai but it just seems to attract the right kind of people. Everyone I met there was always so welcoming, friendly and chilled out. I was there by myself but not once did I ever feel alone. On my first night the group sitting on the table next to me noticed I was alone and invited me over to join them. It turned out they hadn’t been a group for that long, they’d all only met each other that day. Feeling a sense of unity amongst fellow travellers adds so much to your experience and it’s nice to know that people are always looking out for one another. It is not only the tourists who are awesome, the local people are what really make Pai special. Once you’re out of the big city it is so nice to meet such genuinely nice and warm people – without them Pai wouldn’t be a place I go back to time and time again.

Pembroke Waterfall

This is yet another waterfall in Pai that goes by another name – Jumpy. It has been christened Jumpy because there’s a big rock you can leap off into the pool below. It seemed very safe when I was there and deep enough for everyone to try out at least one jump. If taking the leap isn’t for that’s no problem at all because you can just step in and swim right up to the waterfall, having the water run down over you is very refreshing indeed. Always a good place to meet people and absolutely stunning too. It’s such a natural place and one where you can really relax.
