St Petersburg Metro
St Petersburg boasts one of the deepest underground metropolitan rail systems in the world, but how does this differ from any other metro around the world? Church of the Saviour on Spilled Blood
This church was built on the site where Emperor Alexander II was assassinated and was dedicated in his memory, the name of the church itself is a reference to the death of Christ. It differs in architecture to the majority of the rest of St Petersburg, as it is designed in a medieval Russian style. This is one of the most iconic and beautiful buildings in all of St Petersburg.
St Isaacs Cathedral
Situated in St Isaacs square this beautiful cathedral is built in a neoclassical style and is the largest orthodox basilica and the fourth largest cathedral in the world. It is dedicated to Saint Isaac of Dalmatia, a patron saint of Peter the Great, the city’s founder.
Palace Square (Dvortsovaya Ploshchad)
This is the central city square of St Petersburg and of the former Russian Empire. The centre of the square is marked with the Alexander Column, which was designed by Auguste de Montferrand. This red granite column is 47.5 metres high and weighs some 500 tons, it is the tallest of kind in the world. There is no attachment to the base as the column itself is so well set. The square is also surrounded by the famous Winter Palace.
This is the main street that runs right through the heart of the city, it resembles a highway with many lanes and is almost impossible to cross without a proper crossing, as the sheer number of cars travelling at high speed make it dangerous to cross. Many of the cities attractions are situation on or around Nevsky Prospect, as well as the vast majority of the city’s bars, clubs, restaurants and shops.
