St Petersburg Metro

Palace Square (Dvortsovaya Ploshchad)

This is the central city square of St Petersburg and of the former Russian Empire. The centre of the square is marked with the Alexander Column, which was designed by Auguste de Montferrand. This red granite column is 47.5 metres high and weighs some 500 tons, it is the tallest of kind in the world. There is no attachment to the base as the column itself is so well set. The square is also surrounded by the famous Winter Palace.

This is the main street that runs right through the heart of the city, it resembles a highway with many lanes and is almost impossible to cross without a proper crossing, as the sheer number of cars travelling at high speed make it dangerous to cross.
