Getting there

As a tourist the best way to get to Antarctica is without a doubt with a tour group or Antarctica cruise ship. This really isn’t one of those destinations where you can have total freedom in planning your trip, you need to be aware of the fact that traveling to Antarctica should be respected as it is a beautiful, but also dangerous place.

What to do

Zodiac tour

A zodiac tour is a small boat that usually carries less than 10 people and is the perfect way to interact with the Antarctic landscape. Being in a small boat allows you to access small or narrow stretches of water around Antarctica and will allow you to see icebergs up close and personal. There is also the chance of seeing undisturbed wildlife, such as seals, penguins and many other birds.

Penguins

For most people seeing a penguin is going to be a new and different experience and Antarctica is the perfect place to see these beautiful flightless birds. There probably isn’t anywhere else that you could possibly be in the world where you will be within a stones throw of thousands and thousands of penguins and visiting a penguin colony can be an extremely experience that is highly recommended in Antarctica. There is a large colony of Chinstrap penguins on Deception Island that is a truly unique sight to see.

Send a postcard

Would it be possible to receive a postcard from a more unique location than Antarctica? The answer is definitely no, but it is possible to send mail from Antarctica. Obviously it is very likely that you will arrive home before the postcard arrives at your home! However there is probably no better keepsake of your time there

Swim

This may not sound like the most appealing thing to do in one of the coldest places on earth, but swimming at Deception Bay is actually possible without freezing. Deception Island is an active volcano and as a result the water here is much warmer than you would expect and gives you the unique opportunity to swim in one of the harshest landscapes on earth.
