4 THINGS TO SEE IN KUNMING, CHINA

Kunming maybe still be a toddler when it comes to tourism compared to its big brothers like Beijing and Hong Kong but a trip to this countryside city will certainly change your mind. The city looks like a big plantation due to the fact that it is covered all year in trees and plants which may actually be reason why it is not so popular. It is located in central Yunnan and is the capital city and the economic and cultural center of Yunnan. The city has natural landscape that is unique, breathtaking and peculiar.

Here are some beautiful places you should not miss on that trip to Kunming.

Dianchi Lake

You can spend as much time as you like at this beautiful lake because it is open the whole day and you don’t have to pay a dime. The highland limestone and the largest freshwater lake in Yunnan, is located only 2 km southwest of Kunming. You can get there by taking buses from the train station to Haigeng Park. There is a large number of famous mountains and scenic sites around the lake. With over 20 lakes draining into it, its waters are at 1800 meters above sea level and a 5.5 average water depth.

Western hills

The sleeping Buddha hills as they are locally known lie in the western suburbs of Kunming. Visitors are assured of a marvelous scenery provided by the environment with dense forest and flourishing flowers. Apparently this place has gained fame as the place with the most pleasant environment in the world. Big claims indeed, but just in case make sure you know how to find cheap holiday insurance, because mountain rescues can be pricey!

The garden started in 1999 after being the site for the Kunming international horticultural exposition. There is so much to explore what with two big squares, five big exhibition halls, theme gardens and outdoor showplaces. Of the 2551 different plants on display, 112 of them are very rare and even classified as endangered species. It is open every day from 8 am to 6pm and you can get there by taking buses no. 10,69 or 71 to the Kunming horticultural expo garden.

Yuan tong temple

The most famous Buddhist temple in Kunming was recently expanded by funds from Thailand and is located in a natural depression that is protected. Yuan tong treasure hall which is the central hall has 7 different rooms decorated in ancient Chinese architecture like color paintings and glazed facing tiles. Used as a symbol of an emperor in Chinese feudal society, the dragon found in the temple is a rare sight in other temples. Get there by taking buses 4, 74, 59 0r 83 to the Yuan tong mountain station. It is open from 8 in the morning through to 5 in the evening.
